Summary:
Review and Potential Approval of the California Apprenticeship Initiative (CAI) Apprenticeship Grant Program. The CAI is designed to support the creation of pre-apprenticeship and apprenticeship programs in non-traditional, emerging, and innovative sectors, and to increase the accessibility of sustainable high-wage jobs for individuals from historically marginalized and underserved backgrounds. Mt. Diablo Unified School District (MDUSD) will serve as the LEA providing fiscal services in partnership with Bay Area LEEDS, who is developing an Apprenticeship Intermediary Services program to implement a paid high school 3-year nontraditional youth apprenticeship program for 25 students in the East Bay, Mt. Diablo Unified School District being one of the beneficiaries. The grant will pay Bay Area LEEDS and its partners to coordinate and develop the program, systems, industry partnerships and student recruitment strategies and support focused on Engineering, Computer Sciences and Health/BioMed pathways. Existing partnerships in the grant include; Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), California Life Sciences (CLS), Mt. Diablo Unified School District and Mt. Diablo Adult Education (MDAE), Tri-Valley Regional Occupation Program/Technical Education Consortium, and Pittsburg Unified School District. This is a $500,000 grant over three years (2022-2025) and aligns and supports MDUSD pathways, commitment to provide high quality work-based learning opportunities for youth to support student's college and career readiness. CAI is a one-time state investment to develop this new youth apprenticeship strategy in California, and would need to be sustained by other resources after 2025. The 20% match will be met by industry partners.
