Summary:
|
Community Engagement (CE) incorporates service-learning, field placement, and community-based research courses. Students complete CE courses to engage in a learning experience outside the classroom that is integrated with their coursework. The CE course proposals go through a lengthy faculty committee review process to receive CE designation, the faculty must complete an all-day CE training in order to each the courses, and the students must take at least one CE course to graduate. All CE courses fulfill these goals and outcomes. The CE MOU is a College requirement for all of the community partners for students to go off-campus for service. Some CE examples include chemistry students working on science projects with elementary school students, business students designing marketing plans for nonprofit organizations, sociology students providing intake assistance at homeless shelters, biology students collecting water samples to measure for possible contamination, Spanish language students providing translation services for school documents, and future teachers in the classroom to assist with curriculum design. At this time, there are currently Saint Mary's students at Meadow Homes, Cambridge and Mt. Diablo High School. All students are fingerprinted before they are allowed on school property. The original Community Engagement Memo of Understanding was approved by the Board on December of 2013 and was extended for an additional two years in December of 2015. The attached MOU Amendment is being presented to continue the partnership.
