Summary: A 5th Grade Family Life Steering Committee comprised of administrators, teachers, and parents/guardians met July 9, 2018, and July 16, 2018, to review the 5th grade family life curriculum and to identify areas for improvement for the 2018-19 school year and beyond. These recommendations were presented at the September 12, 2018 Board meeting for information. They are:

Overarching Recommendations
• All sites should schedule parent/family night to review materials
• Teachers and parents need access to same version of lessons
• Single opt out only for lessons covered by Education Code 51931(b)- human development and sexuality, including education on pregnancy, contraception, and sexually transmitted infections.
• Training be provided for teachers (including PE teachers), principals, and support staff

Lesson Recommendations
• Lessons on friendships, bullying and how to be clear with your friends should be taught at beginning of year
• 4 videos included in lessons should be replaced with ones from CCCOE Ed1Stop “Brainpop” website.
• Information on feminine hygiene products should be included in lesson
• Lesson 8 focusing on HIV be moved to middle school level
• Lesson 10 focusing on difference between gender identity, gender expression, and gender orientation be moved to middle school level
