Summary:
|
Staff request approval to apply for the K12 Strong Workforce Program Grant to create, support, and/or expand high-quality career technical education programs at the K12 level aligned with the workforce development efforts, and encompasses a collaborative regional approach to increase the transition to post-secondary and career. Applications must be project based and occur within 30 months.
MDUSD proposes to submit two SWP grant applications; one individually and one in partnership with Contra Costa County Office of Education (CCCOE) Consortium. First, MDUSD proposes to submit a district application targeting schools with at least 50% students identified as English Language Learners, low income or foster youth at Concord High School, Mt. Diablo High School, Ygnacio Valley High School, and Olympic High School. MDUSD’s project is to create a cohorted summer internship program with Diablo Valley College to offer dual enrollment in a Career Counseling course. Students who complete the college course would be eligible for paid internships, using K12 SWP funds. Field trips and other work based learning opportunities for students will enhance their experience. The MDUSD grant would be $225,000 and requires a 2:1 match from district grants and funds.
The second application is with the CCCOE Consortium which includes 5 community colleges and 11 school districts, and will target pathways in Health Care, Information Communication Technology (ICT), and in Engineering/Advanced Manufacturing continuing the work started under the California Career Pathway Trust grant. Strategies include: summer bridge programs; aligning pathways to community college pathways; early college credit and work based learning opportunities; and collaboration between K12 and community college counselors to increase completion of pathways. The consortium is applying for $4.4M; the required match will be 1:1. The total amount received and match required will depend on the award amount. Staff anticipates matching up to $100,000, making MDUSD eligible for $100,000 SWP funds.
