Summary:
Staff is requesting approval of a grant submission detailing a partnership with St. Mary's College of California with the goal of designing an undergraduate STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) teacher preparation program that will address the dire shortage of STEM teachers in under-served school communities through a National Science Foundation Grant. In support of this grant, Mt. Diablo Unified School District (MDUSD) will agree to conduct a needs assessment of STEM teaching and learning by engaging students and teachers at high needs schools in surveys and focus groups and, to help identify areas for collaboration and partnership between St. Mary's School of Science and School of Education-Justice, Community and Leadership, and MDUSD to enhance STEM teaching and learning at both institutions. This partnership will help increase the pipeline of single subject STEM teachers to teach at Title I schools in Mt. Diablo Unified School District.  
Funding:
The planning grant in the amount of $75,000.00 for 2020-2021 is to be shared between the Mt. Diablo Unified School District and St. Mary's College.
