Summary:
A textbook committee was convened to identify instructional materials to support the Board adopted course Healthcare Essentials. The textbook committee recommends adoption of "Introduction to Health Science - Pathways to Your Future", (Winger & Blahnik). This textbook has lesson plans that are connected to Health Career Technical Student Organization, HOSA, and it provides an excellent overview of the different healthcare pathways. It is aligned to the CTE Model standards for Health Pathways and provides students with information about the different medical and biotechnology careers available to our students, supporting the goal of exposing students to all types of careers within healthcare. The textbook also has extensive student resources that are easy for all students to access. Both parents and students found that the book provided a thorough explanation of different careers in healthcare and appropriately supported course standards. Parents and students also felt that the content, in addition to the supplemental resources, was accessible by all students. The textbook is also used by the local community college and supports articulation between MDUSD and the local community college.

The text will be available for public review and comment in the Dent lobby until September 12, 2018.
