2024-2025 K12 Stronger Workforce Program Grant Overview (1).pdf
Summary: MDUSD requests approval to apply for the K12 Strong Workforce Program (K12 SWP) grants to create, support, and/or expand high-quality career technical education programs at the K-12 level aligned with the workforce development efforts, and encompasses a collaborative regional approach to increase the transition to post secondary and career. Applications must be project based and occur within 30 months. MDUSD proposes to submit three SWP grant applications: one individually and two in partnership with Contra Costa County Office of Education (CCCOE) Consortium. MDUSD's first proposal is to develop a project that would serve food Service and Hospitality students at Mt. Diablo High School (MDHS) and Consumer Services students at Olympic High School (OHS). It will support a partnership with the Walnut Creek Chamber of Commerce, Visit Walnut Creek, the Greater Concord Chamber of Commerce, and Visit Concord in providing meaningful work based learning opportunities. It will also develop opportunities for students to earn industry certifications, with possible dual enrollment from Diablo Valley College (DVC) and a partnership with the Hospitality, Tourism and Recreation Department at California State University, East Bay. The grant would be up to $300,000 and requires a 2:1 match from district grants and funds. The other two applications will be as part of CCCOE's consortium. The first CCCOE proposal will focus on integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into MDUSD pathways and building the capacity for teachers to use AI for learning. It will support Computer Science pathways in revising curriculum and will provide training to Computer Science teachers. This project will also support teachers in other pathways where AI is disrupting the industry through teacher training on using AI in the classroom and student experiences demonstrating how AI is used in different industries. The required match for this grant is 1:1. MDUSD would join this project and offer a match of up to $150,000, making MDUSD eligible to receive up to $150,000. The second CCCOE proposal will focus on integrating green technologies into Construction, Advanced Manufacturing, Transportation, and Engineering pathways. This project will update the curriculum to include current industry standards in green technology. Additionally, this project will provide more hands-on projects, career exploration opportunities, and development of industry standard skills -- all focused on green trades. The required match for this grant is 1:1. MDUSD would join this project and offer a match of up to $150,000, making MDUSD eligible to receive up to $150,000.
Funding: $300,000 K12 Strong Workforce Program Grant for on MDUSD grant. $300,000 K12 Strong Workforce Program Grant for two CCCOE Consortium grants ($150,000 each)
Fiscal Impact Grant match would come from: 3277 Workforce Investment and Opportunity Act (WIOA), and 2726 Expanded Learning Opportunity Program (ELOP), Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF), 0927 LCFF 9-12 Augmentation, 4011 unrestricted General Fund-Career Center, and 0930 Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF) Supplemental.
