The U.S. Department of Education's Green Ribbon Schools (ED-GRS) recognition award honors schools, school districts, and Institutes of Higher Education for excellence in resource efficiency, health and wellness, and environmental and sustainability education. The recognition award is part of a larger U.S. Department of Education (ED) effort to identify and communicate practices that result in improved student engagement, academic achievement, graduation rates, and workforce preparedness; and reinforces federal efforts to increase energy independence and economic security. The California Green Ribbon Schools (CA-GRS) recognition award uses the applications submitted for nomination to the U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon Schools (ED-GRS) to recognize schools and school districts across the state for environmental excellence and demonstrated achievement of the three Pillars of ED-GRS. Learn about the California Green Ribbon Award at https://www.cde.ca.gov/ls/fa/sf/greenribbonprog.asp Foothill Middle School received the Green Ribbon Award for their recycling and composting program. Recognition was given earlier in May in Anaheim as part of the California Distinguished Schools Awards ceremony with State Superintendent Tom Torlakson. Foothill Middle was the only school in Contra Costa Country to receive this prestigious award. Foothill Middle will give a short presentation on their journey to receiving this recognition.
